Also at ALA...

... there was an author's presentation of the book called "Stitches: A Memoir". Yes, David Small was telling his story about the process of creation of his memoir in a comic story format. He said he knew that it was very unlikely that he would write a book, but he still wanted to tell his story. Being an extraordinary artist, he started to make drawings of his childhood home and his family. The process of creation of the drawings forced him to re-live his horrific childhood and revive his long time deceased mother "as if she were Frankenstein". Unable to stop, he make more and more drawings until he decided to combine them into a story and show them to a literary agent. To make the long story short, five major publishers made him an offer in less than 24 hours after they received a manuscript.

The book came out and shortly after won The National Book Award.
This story is very unique in its circumstance and at the same time many readers who were unloved as kids can associate with it.
We will not give out the plot; if you have not read this book, we encourage you to do it. The best introduction to it would be this video with five scenes from the book where author reads his own text:
